UNDP Sudan – Supply and Installation of Turnkey Solar PV Water Pump System for Irrigation

challenge

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy and livelihoods in Sudan's rural areas. Most
people rely on limited rainwater supplies and diesel water pumps to meet their needs. While
electricity supply is occasionally reliable, it is often non-existent. Consequently, the use of
diesel water pumps, which is very expensive, is highly subsidized.

outcome

This project aims to replace diesel water pumps with solar PV water pumps, reducing
dependency on scarce diesel fuel and promoting clean energy. By ensuring a continuous
water supply for agriculture, the project significantly benefits the local population. 198 pump
systems have been successfully installed, leading to improved agricultural productivity,
reduced fuel costs, and enhanced livelihoods for the rural communitie
