Syria – Supply of 16.000 Solar Streetlights

Syria
Years of conflict in Syria have severely damaged public infrastructure and left many neighbourhoods with limited or unreliable electricity. Darkness in streets and public spaces increases protection risks, restricts movement after dark, and reduces community life—especially for women, children, older persons, and people with disabilities.
For returning and displaced families, the absence of safe lighting also affects daily routines: people avoid moving at night, public services become harder to access, and households are left without basic visibility and security. UNHCR has highlighted how street lighting enables safer movement, supports evening study for children, and helps families resume normal life after dark.
At the same time, conventional grid-powered lighting is often not feasible due to damaged networks, fuel shortages, and high operating costs. A scalable, low-maintenance, off-grid solution was required—one that could be deployed rapidly and operate reliably across diverse urban and rural contexts.

CAA Energy GmbH supplied 16,000 solar street lights to UNHCR in Syria to support large-scale public lighting interventions in affected communities. The systems were designed for rapid deployment without dependence on the grid, helping restore night-time visibility in streets and communal areas while minimizing operational cost and maintenance burden.
Solar street lighting is widely used by UNHCR and partners as a practical protection and recovery measure: it improves perceived and actual safety, enables mobility after dark, and supports community functionality. Large UNHCR-supported deployments in Syria have included multi-city programmes aimed at “safer night mobility and faster community recovery,” demonstrating the role of solar lighting in infrastructure rehabilitation and stabilization.
UNHCR’s continued procurement and installation activities for solar streetlighting components in Syria further reflect the ongoing demand for these systems to strengthen public safety and urban services.
