Large parts of rural Sierra Leone remain without access to reliable electricity, particularly in remote communities located far from the national grid. Limited energy access constrains essential services such as healthcare delivery, education, water supply, and local economic activities. Communities often rely on diesel generators or informal energy sources, which are expensive, unreliable, and environmentally harmful.
Despite previous investments in distribution networks, the absence of stable and sustainable power generation has limited the full utilization of these systems. Poor infrastructure, challenging site conditions, and limited technical capacity further complicate energy access in rural areas. Addressing these constraints required a robust, scalable, and resilient off-grid solution capable of delivering continuous power while supporting long-term community development.
CAA Energy GmbH delivered containerised off-grid solar photovoltaic mini-grid systems across six rural communities in southern Sierra Leone. The scope of work covered engineering, procurement, supply, installation, civil works, testing, commissioning, and handover of complete PV generation assets integrated with battery energy storage and low-voltage distribution networks.
Each site was equipped with a 19 kWp ground-mounted solar PV system paired with lithium-ion battery storage, housed in a fully containerised power station. The systems were designed as standalone mini-grids, capable of providing reliable three-phase electricity independent of the national grid. Integrated monitoring, protection, and control systems ensure safe operation, efficient energy management, and future scalability.
The installed mini-grids now provide stable, clean electricity to previously underserved communities, enabling improved access to essential services, supporting local economic activities, and reducing dependence on diesel generation. The project strengthens rural energy infrastructure, enhances community resilience, and contributes to Sierra Leone’s broader objectives of sustainable development, climate responsibility, and inclusive access to modern energy services.

Renewable energy is a symbol of a bright new future for Africa and for our planet. We aim to provide access to sustainable, high-quality energy systems and infrastructure across Sub-Saharan Africa.
