challenge

Small-scale farmers across South Sudan operate in a highly fragile agricultural context marked by climate variability, limited infrastructure, and unreliable access to water for irrigation. Farming systems remain largely rain-fed, leaving communities vulnerable to dry spells and seasonal shocks. At the same time, conventional diesel-powered pumping is often impractical due to high fuel costs, supply constraints, and maintenance challenges, while local technical capacity for operating and maintaining irrigation systems remains limited.

These constraints directly affect food production, farmer incomes, and resilience, highlighting the need for irrigation solutions that are reliable, affordable, and adapted to remote, off-grid field conditions.

outcome

To address these challenges, CAA Energy supplied 148 standardized solar irrigation water pump kits to FAO for deployment in support of small-scale farmers and farmer groups across South Sudan. The off-grid systems provide a total installed capacity of 59.2 kWp and are designed without battery storage to ensure operational simplicity and low maintenance requirements.

Each kit is simple, robust, and reliable, specifically engineered for heavy field usage and harsh rural environments. The modular and transportable design allows flexible deployment, while integrated phone charging functionality enhances usability for farmers and field staff.

The project combines technology delivery with a train-the-trainers capacity-building approach. Technicians from a local university were trained to install, operate, and maintain the systems and to provide on-site training and troubleshooting support to farmers. This approach strengthens local technical capacity, ensures long-term system functionality, and embeds sustainability beyond initial deployment.
